Global Covid cases near 111 million

The world is nearing the grim milestone of 111 million Covid-19 cases, despite high rates of vaccination.

The global case count reached 110,687,323 while the death toll from the deadly virus mounted to 2,450,499 on Saturday morning, according to Johns Hopkins University (JHU).

The US has so far recorded 27,999,565 cases and 495,506 deaths, as per the data.

The US had administered an average of 1.7 million doses per day in the week that ended on Tuesday, evidence that the pace of the vaccination programme was picking up, reports AP.

Brazil, which has the world’s second-largest Covid-19 death toll after the United States,has registered 10,084,208 cases and 244,737 deaths respectively as of Friday, the Health Ministry said Friday.

India’s Covid tally rose to 10,963,394 on Friday, while the death toll mounted to 156,111, according to the figures.

Situation in Bangladesh

Eight coronavirus-related deaths and 406 new cases were recorded in Bangladesh until Friday morning.

Vaccination in Bangladesh

 

The government kicked off the countrywide Covid-19 vaccination drive on February 7.

Bangladesh inked an agreement with the Serum Institute of India, the world’s largest vaccine maker, for 30 million doses of Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine. Serum will send five million doses each month between January and June.
